Japanese Spitz Grooming: Jessie’s Summer Groom

Tirau Groomers - Jessie 1

Jessie is a beautiful Japanese Spitz and another Tirau local. Here she is enjoying her bath before her full groom. Jessie is always so well behaved on the table, and she left feeling cool and refreshed for the hot summer days.

Caring for a double coat

Japanese Spitz have a thick double coat: a soft, dense undercoat under a longer, straight outer coat. The undercoat is what keeps them warm in winter and insulated in summer, so we don’t shave it. Instead, we focus on removing the loose undercoat so air can move through the coat.

What we do for a Spitz

  • A thorough bath and rinse right down to the skin
  • A high-velocity blow dry to push out loose undercoat
  • A full brush out and de-shed
  • A neat tidy of the feet, sanitary area and outline
  • Nail trim and ear clean

Shedding season

Spitz usually drop their undercoat heavily once or twice a year. A groom at the start of the shed saves a lot of hair around the house. In between visits, brushing two or three times a week with a slicker brush and an undercoat rake keeps mats away.

Well done, Jessie! Book a de-shedding groom online or see what’s included in each package.
